about

Rona Mac's new single 'Smoke' is a simple, cyclical and melodic song, lyrically driven over a swirling vocal backdrop. Smoke demonstrates Rona's stripped-back style, bringing the song to it's full potential whilst keeping it spacious and painfully raw.

The track is embedded in her rural surroundings, with vocals recorded in a Cathedral bell tower amongst the chatter of crows. It was written during the first lockdown. “I'd manically cleared out and cleaned my caravan, and then sat down thinking 'what the hell do I do now?'. The song ruminates over the many things that make me want to smoke – bad days, wistful moments, nights with my beautiful friends, angst and change.”

lyrics

Smoke

I've thrown away all my pictures
Every old tea and health tincture
Pebbles piled high in the kitchen
Things that have helped me to function
In times when my numbers were hidden
I told myself joy was forbidden
All the steep drops I have ridden
Heart in my mouth of a sudden
Commit to the grit of your faces
Slapped around all different places
Boundaries have all been quite useless
Must keep my face keep my graces
Maybe this time on me's wasted
I loved like a dog and was faced with
A darkness that marked me with hatred
Now I'll step back a few paces
Sit in my den of this safe space
Traced your face once I got heartache
Not worth then risk of a new break
Day after day until days break
Dig into the mud with my hands gripped
Time seems so young until it slipped
It's hard to get, plays that old trick
It's hard to get, just like your lip
So we sit and drink and smoke
And try to stay afloat
It's a good job we're all on the same boat
It's a good job we all learnt to smoke.

about

Rona Mac Wales, UK

I write atmospheric Indie-pop songs about things that feel real to me, in hope that they might feel real to other people. I'm from West Wales, I'm 28, I'm gay, and I live in a caravan where I write, record + mix music. If I can talk about things we've been told we shouldn't, and help people connect to feelings they tucked away in their teens, then I'll be happy when I'm old. So I'm giving it a go. ... more
